The Church of Christ, informally referred to as the "Church of Christ (Whitmerite)", was organized by William E. McLellin in 1847. McLellin believed David Whitmer was the rightful successor to Joseph Smith, Jr. and encouraged Whitmer to endorse his church and gather members to Kirtland. Whitmer himself did not join with McLellin, but he would later reorganize the church in the 1870s.
